StaceyFest will be the first disability culture festival in recent memory and an opportunity to celebrate the memory and ongoing legacy of renowned disability justice advocate Stacey Park Milbern. This transformative community gathering will include:
- a mainstage program featuring disabled artists of color,
- a disability resilience fair that will highlight resources and opportunities for engaging and thriving,
- a community altar to honor our disabled ancestors who have passed, and stories of the rich history of disability rights and disability justice movements that have their roots right here in the East Bay.
In honor of her spirit and activism, the StaceyFest: Disability Love and Legacy Celebration will prioritize disabled culture and community solidarity. Dancers, singers and musicians with various disabilities will perform on stage. Writers and poets will lead readings and discussions. Disability organizations will share their resources with participants and offer opportunities to get involved. The festival will be held in July 2024 in Oakland/unceded Ohlone land, during July because it is Disability Pride Month.
The planning process includes an advisory team of emerging leaders who bring experience and skills for planning disability-forward events, people who were closest to Stacey and can hold and honor what she would want this event to be, and community partners that believe in Stacey’s vision for our community. About Stacey Park Milbern
Stacey Park Milbern was a fierce frontline organizer and activist for over 15 years. Her work was deep and her history of movement work long. We want to specifically highlight some of the work she did in her last years, which emphasized the survival of people with disabilities as we faced multiple emergencies in our communities.
During the 2018 and 2019 California wildfires, Stacey coordinated care for the East Bay disability community. When PG&E shut off power, off access to oxygen machines and power wheelchair, Stacey co-formed the group Power to Live, which advocated to provide and maintain access to critical equipment. At the onset of the COVID pandemic, Stacey advocated against care rationing that would deprioritize disabled people and refuse them life-saving treatment. She coordinated care networks for herself and others to receive groceries and COVID-safe support. All this happened from her home, which became a disability hub known as the Disability Justice Culture Club.
